The Runner’s Journey: A 5k, me???

July 7, 2012 by clutterbusting Leave a Comment

This past week I embarked on my latest journey…to run a 5k race.

I stared a Couch to 5K clinic that will run for the 12 weeks prior to the race culminating with the John Rogucki Memorial Kensington Challenge on September 15.

Sure. I have walked 3.1 miles in the past. I did it twice the last two weekends. I even walked in a 5k “race” before. But this is huge for me. I am opening myself up to the possibility that I have some run in me. I have “tried” running off and on for the last 30 years. I have never gotten to the “runner’s high”. I have just gotten to the “why do people do this” and “this is supposed to make me feel good” pain, frustration and sense of failure.

With the help of my life coach, Janet, and my fellow clinic participants and colleagues (some who are runners and have convinced me I am a runner too it’s just that I haven’t run in a group before or had support) I can’t wait to see what I can accomplish. The goal is to run the full race and then decide if I am a runner or not (am I going to run another race and/or will I just incorporate runs in my exercise schedule).

I have already developed a “project” plan for this endeavor. I have bought a new pair of running shoes. I completed my first three runs this week and my opinion hasn’t changed much so far although I have to admit I felt excited about the accomplishment of completing the training sessions. And I am ready and sort of looking forward to the training that next week will bring.

So check in to see how I progress through this 12 week runner’s journey. I would appreciate any cheers; shout outs; “at a girl’s” and positive comments you can send my way. Or join me in a fitness challenge of your own making.
