The Word for 2023: Release

January 7, 2023 by DeclutterDivva Leave a Comment

Every year I choose a word to focus on versus making resolutions. Don’t get me wrong, I do set goals, update my mission statements and vision board, but setting a focus or intention for the year has been more successful for me.

For 2023, my word is release. According to dictionary.com, the definition for release is:

release

verb (used with object), re·leased, re·leas·ing.

  1. to free from confinement, bondage, obligation, pain, etc.; let go: to release a prisoner; to release someone from a debt.
  2. to free from anything that restrains, fastens, etc.: to release a catapult.
  3. to allow to be known, issued, done, or exhibited: to release an article for publication.
  4. Law. to give up, relinquish, or surrender (a right, claim, etc.).

noun

  1. a freeing or releasing from confinement, obligation, pain, emotional strain, etc.
  2. liberation from anything that restrains or fastens.
  3. some device or agency for effecting such liberation.
  4. a grant of permission, as to publish, use, or sell something.
  5. the releasing of something for publication, performance, use, exhibition, or sale.
  6. the film, book, record, etc., that is released.

My intention for this year is to let go of old beliefs, old habits, clutter, and other things that are keeping me stuck, weighing me down or holding me back. The focus will be on igniting the achievement of my goals and support my mission statements.

What will be your focus for 2023?

To Be Nine Month Check In

October 1, 2022 by clutterbusting Leave a Comment

Wow! Where has nine months gone? I am not sure, but it has gone by quickly.

They say that life happens while you are planning it and, this year, just like others, I started out with the intention of focusing on my word, yet life gets in the way.

Interesting because my word this year is “be.”

While I wouldn’t say that I was 100% successful, I am pleased with what I have accomplished so far with that intention. I believe that I have meditated 297 out of 302 days this year (but who is counting?). I have not done quiet so well with journaling so I will score myself a 90%. Yet I have taken time in the morning most days for contemplation and prayer. I have also spent time in nature and doing creative things. So, I have moved toward my goal significantly.

Where I need to focus now is still working on the roles that I play and determining which ones continue to support me.

Unbeing Everything That Really Isn’t You

July 2, 2022 by clutterbusting Leave a Comment

“Maybe the journey isn’t so much about becoming anything. Maybe it’s about un-becoming everything that isn’t really you, so you can be who you were meant to be in the first place.” ? Paul Coelho

My word for 2021 is “be.” I have been working toward that word now for six months and I am not sure that I can say that I have been successful yet.

As previously shared, I am incredibly good at doing. I have a master list, a weekly list and a daily list which doesn’t necessarily leave time to just be.

Unbecoming or to stop being what no longer serves me seems more doable for me. Because I truly do not want to look up one day and say, “what happened to my life.”

Looking at it from the space of unbecoming asks us to throw off the messaging we receive from our loved ones, our society, our culture, our entertainment, our spiritual communities; all the things that don’t resonate with who we are at our core or that lead us into spiraling busyness. It is a call to release yourself from the idea that you are not enough and/or not doing enough. Freeing yourself can take you to new heights. Trying Our Best

February 19, 2022 by clutterbusting Leave a Comment

“Life doesn’t require that we be the best, only that we try our best.” `H. Jackson Brown, Jr.

As I wrap my arms around my word for the year, I am feeling challenged. I am so used to being task oriented that I have even created a to do list for those things I want to incorporate into just being such as meditation, journaling, yoga, and contemplation.

The quote reminds me that my best approach is to take it day by day and do my best for that day and then let it go.

As I said in my last post, life is a journey and not a sprint. So, let’s take it a step at a time and strive to do our best each day.

Go Slow to Go Fast

February 12, 2022 by clutterbusting Leave a Comment

Those words “go slow to go fast” came to me as I was reflecting on January and my word “be.” Just as with anything, I am not suddenly going to be excellent at being. It will take work to get there and time.

A colleague of mine would say “we may have to go slow to go fast” all the time when we were working on projects together reminding us that there is not always a straight line to follow, that barriers arise, and that determination and teamwork will get us to the finish line.

I am also reminded that life is a journey not a race or a sprint. It is about our accomplishments along the way. And that we should never stop once we reach a goal because that is when we back slide.

So, I am readjusting my expectations that this “being” is a process that won’t happen tomorrow and that I will need to “work” on it.

Overall, January and being went fine. Slower progress than expected. Yet as I look back, I am not sure what I really expected. I created to dos related to my health and organization which are two of my mission statements.  I will continue to work on blending/balancing doing and being. I am excited to see where February continues to lead me.
