The Journey Into Clutter Busting- Have a Successful Garage Sale

July 16, 2011 by clutterbusting Leave a Comment

I am totally immersed into getting ready for my garage sale. The sight of the garage sale pile of boxes is exciting. It is exciting because I know that this pile is stuff that will be leaving my home for good. Once it goes to the sale, if it is not sold, it will immediately go to a charity.

In addition to some of the tips that I have already provided about getting ready for a garage sale, here are a few more:

• Spread the word about your sale via email or Facebook the Wednesday before the sale.
• Post ads on free lists such as craigslist.com and garagesalestracker.com.
• Put up a sign at the local grocery store or drug store.
• Post road signs (where you will get most of your traffic) a few days before the sale.

And as for pricing items as you get ready for the sale consider using resources such as eBay, craiglook.com or stop at your local thrift or consignments shops to investigate prices.

Pricing items “right” and getting the word out can help you have a successful garage sale because the whole idea is to not have these items come back into your home…so do what it takes to get them sold.

The Journey Into Clutter Busting: The Basement Status Check

June 25, 2011 by clutterbusting Leave a Comment

I can’t believe it has been four months since I started my clutter busting journey in the basement and, yet, when I realized it had been I thought it was a great time to reflect upon the journey and my progress.

Many would question why the basement isn’t done yet…me I see the consistent change in the basement and steady progress. Of course my preference along with others would have been to be able to finish the project in a weekend…maybe if I had a crew and weren’t going it alone. The Journey Into Clutter Busting: Garage Sale Planning

June 18, 2011 by clutterbusting Leave a Comment

The focus this past week was preparing for a garage sale. Two weeks ago I did make the decision to hold a garage sale later this summer. To accomplish the task I developed a project plan including tasks and timelines.

To accomplish this project I focused on going through the piles in the basement already designated for a garage sale to see exactly what I had and to start categorizing and pricing items so it will be easy to set out on the sale date.

I have a decent amount of things. I now need to work with my husband to sort and price tools he inherited from his dad last year which should be a draw to get people to the sale.

Now I am on the hunt for more items in the house that should leave and go to someone else’s home.

The Journey Into Clutter Busting: The Basement – Disaster Box

June 11, 2011 by clutterbusting Leave a Comment

The recent news about all the weather disasters has been disturbing. But I have chosen to be prepared instead of disturbed. To take action instead of accepting fear.

One thing that you can do to be prepared for weather or any type of disaster is to have a disaster kit ready. I call it my disaster box and it is stored in the basement. So it was natural for me to review and update the disaster box this week in my basement project.

When I originally prepared my box several years ago I went to the government’s website  which has a great list for you to use. I actually used this resource and created my own check list. I keep the list on top of the box with the intention of reviewing the box every six months for expiration dates and integrity of the supplies inside of my handy plastic tub used for this purpose.

Should there be some reason for me to “camp” out in the basement, I need to only gather a few things and be set if needed.

For me this gives me a little piece of mind…in being prepared. In fact the day after I sorted the disaster box we had a tornado warning. I felt a little better about the situation knowing I could locate supplies easily if needed.

Do you have a disaster kit ready? When will you commit to setting one up?
