Clutter Busting: Upcycle Your Stuff for Storage

August 8, 2015 by clutterbusting Leave a Comment

Let’s face it we like our stuff. And it is hard to let go of our things. This is for many reasons that I that I have already shared.

So if you can’t let it go yet, why not consider putting for of your stuff to work by upcycling it into storage solutions and, therefore, decreasing your clutter.

Here are some ideas:

  • CD tower made into a toiletry organizer
  • Wine crates turned into a planter
  • Screen door made into a pot rack
  • Sweater shelf turned craft paper storage
  • Window shutters as mail sorter
  • Egg crates turned ornament storage protector
  • Wine rack made into a towel rack
  • Bundt pan turned cosmetic storage
  • Ladder turned bookshelf
  • Drawers made into under bed storage by adding wheels on the bottom

Repurposing our stuff into storage solutions can rein in clutter and provide chic storage solutions.

I use a sweater shelf unit that you attached to your closet bar to store craft paper and an old bathroom trash can (cleaned of course) to corral rolls of wrapping paper. I also converted an over-the-door shoe hanger for craft storage.

What item can you upcycle today?

Clutter Busting: Handle Your Clothes Daily

August 1, 2015 by clutterbusting Leave a Comment

Daily routines help keep you clutter free and organized. Dealing with your clothes daily is one routine that will help keep your bedroom and/or closet free of chaos.

As you undress every day fold clean clothes and return them to the drawer or hang them up. Place dirty clothes immediately in the hamper. Handling each clothing item right when you take it off…making a decision to put it away or toss it in the wash…makes keeping clothing/closet/bedroom clutter controlled and simple. By doing this you will gain control of your space by not delaying decisions and processing your clothing daily.

Don’t forget to also put away your jewelry, accessories and shoes at the same time.

Start today.

Note: If I wear items more than once, I hang or fold the item inside out so I can keep track of the number of times I have worn the item and know when to toss it directly in the hamper.

Clutter Busting Challenge: Remove 10 clothing items from your closet today

July 25, 2015 by clutterbusting Leave a Comment

I challenge you. Take five minutes to go through your closet today and select 10 things that you no longer wear and put them in a box. By doing this today, your remaining clothes will fit better in your closet, you will create space, and you will have a clearer view of your wardrobe options. And if you write “donate” on the box when you are done, you’ll feel better about yourself as soon as you put the box in your car so you can drop it off tomorrow. More than likely, you’ll find yourself inspired to do it again soon. When will you do it next?

I did it one Saturday morning in June and I plan to do it again today.

Clutter Busting: Using Clear Shoe Organizers or Over-the-Door Storage

July 18, 2015 by clutterbusting Leave a Comment

Using clear shoe organizers in unique ways can help conquer chaos and organize your stuff and add additional storage space especially in small areas. Here are some storage ideas for shoe organizers.

  • Use in the entryway for hats, gloves and scarves.
  • Use in the garage for nails, screwdrivers and smaller workshop items.
  • Use in the bathroom for bath and beauty items or for wash cloths and other bath items or hair accessories or makeup or create a nail care center.
  • Use in the kitchen for spices or small bags or packaged mixes or lunch making supplies (plastic utensils, sandwich bags, straws, etc.) or small kitchen gadgets.
  • Use in the linen closet for washcloths and pillow cases.
  • Use in the office or craft room to house art supplies, or sewing supplies or small office supplies or create a wrapping center.
  • Use in your children’s bedroom to corral small toys or stuffed animals or pieces to board games.
  • Use in the family or media room to store cords games or controllers.
  • Use to help your child learning to dress themselves by storing socks, underwear or other small clothing items so they can self-select items in the morning.
  • Use in the closet to organize jewelry, or scarfs or socks.
  • Use in the baby’s room to store diapers, ointments, lotions, rattles and other items.
  • Use in the mudroom to store sun lotion, keys, umbrellas, or outgoing mail.

And, of course, use to organize your shoes too.

Clutter Busting: Jewelry Solutions

July 11, 2015 by clutterbusting Leave a Comment

Jewelry can easily become a jumbled mess. Do you know what you have or do you use the same pieces because you don’t want to sort through the mess?

Take a little time to tame your jewelry and expand your wardrobe.

Use the same principle of sort and purge to get a handle on what you have by pulling out every piece of jewelry you have a laying it out in one area. Categorize each items and place in each container labeled:  to sell, to donate, to toss, to repair/clean (only if you do it in two weeks) or to keep.

Figure out what to do with what you decided to keep by thinking about how you use jewelry. Do you take it off when you get in the door and need a common place to put it in the kitchen so you can carry it upstairs to the bed room later? Will you take the time to put things back in boxes or drawers or would it be easier to create a visually pleasing solution out in the open? Remember you don’t have to be confined to a jewelry box.

Here are some alternative storage ideas of corralling your jewelry: [Read more…] about Clutter Busting: Jewelry Solutions
