More Holiday Savings- Regifting

October 13, 2012 by clutterbusting Leave a Comment

Each year in December I post about National Regifting Day which is the third Thursday in December.

This year I thought I would post on the subject earlier since this month I decided to focus on freeing up some holiday money. Another opportunity for some savings this year is to regift. Read more about regifting and consider using it as a tool to save money this holiday season.

Easy Holiday Money

October 6, 2012 by clutterbusting Leave a Comment

I was preparing for an upcoming seminar that I am doing on October 23 at the Farmington Community Library on Surviving the Holidays and that made me think that we all could use some extra cash for holiday celebrations. So if you are looking for a few more dollars for your holiday budget here are some tips that can help you eliminate some clutter as well.

  • Search your house for hidden gems such as old toys and action figures and sell them on eBay.
  • Take heirlooms to antique stores for pricing or vintage comic books or autographed sports memorabilia to a pawn-shop.
  • Find your loose cash. On average each adult has about $90 in loose change around the house and bills left in clothes pockets. So begin hunting and cash the change in.
  • Review your current expenses and eliminate three items reduce (like eating out less frequently) or eliminate (like the gym membership you aren’t using).

Even implementing one of these tips can add more cash in your pocket for the holidays!

De-clutter: tackle the garage

May 26, 2012 by clutterbusting Leave a Comment

As the weather warms up, our attention turns outdoors. Why not start with de-cluttering the garage? And the memorial weekend gives you the time you need to tackle this type project.

Here are some tips:

o Clear out the garage. Take everything out. Purge unused items and sort what remains into categories such as sports, gardening, yard and tools.
o Get rid of cobwebs and debris. Sweep and wash the garage floor.
o Look at the categories of the remaining items that need to go back into the garage and create zones.
o Use pegboards or buy a system that takes up minimal space to store tools and gardening supplies.
o Hang bikes, skateboards and other athletic gear on the wall to create more space.
o Create a recycling center using containers labeled.
o Put hooks in the wall for lawn chairs.
o Use bins for balls and other yard games.
o Appropriately dispose of unused or expired chemicals.

Now look at what you achieved and feel good about the organized space you just created! Now go and enjoy the summer!

May 19, 2012 by clutterbusting Leave a Comment

Here are some easy sorting projects that can be tackled 30 minutes or less each that will help you regain control of some of your spaces.

  1. Organize under your kitchen and/or bathroom sink. Appropriately dispose of products you no longer use. Organize the remaining products by task.
  2. Unify your utensils by pitching broken, unused or damaged gadgets. Wipe out the drawer and organize in a tray or use a container on the counter top. [Read more…] about De-clutter: easy sorting projects

De-clutter: make your closets work for you

May 12, 2012 by clutterbusting Leave a Comment

Many times we have clutter and cluttered entrances because we aren’t using our closets well.

Here are some tips for getting your closets to work for you:
o Get rid of little used outerwear.
o Use plastic bins on the shelf to store hats, gloves and scarves or use a shoe caddy hung on the back of the door.
o Add a rack on the floor for shoes and boots.
o Move the sports equipment and vacuum to another spot. If you can’t, designate a zone for it in the closet.

Using the following out-of-the-closet storage solutions to create more room:
o Store off-season items else where and schedule a date in your calendar to rotate.
o Get a pretty container for umbrellas and keep them nicely contained in the entryway.
o Place a coat tree or a wall-mounted rack in the hall to handle everyday outerwear.
o Keep a cubby system under a bench for shoes.

By keeping only the essentials in the closet and using appropriate storage containers, you can get your closets to work for you. If you have an organized and clutter-free closet you will use it and not just dump things in the entryway.
