Clutter Busting: JUST STOP! Just say no

August 5, 2017 by clutterbusting Leave a Comment

There is one more technique that we all need to learn to help us stop clutter from entering into our home… that is the word NO.

Many times we feel uncomfortable declining an offer, a gift, a free item or in dealing with the emotions that a purchase or acquisition can bring to light.

Here are some ideas on how to say NO when you make the choice to not bring something into your home:

  • No thank you. (Period.)
  • I appreciate the offer, but I do not have room for this in my home right now.
  • I am grateful for you thinking of me and while I am honored, I think someone else would be able to use this more than I will.
  • While I have fond memories of this being in the house we visited while I was growing up, I don’t have a use for this in our home.
  • Thank you but no. I do not have a use for this right now (or I don’t need another coffee mug right now).

Not giving into the impulse to buy or take items in the moment will contribute positively to your desire to have less chaos in your home. Is this difficult. It is especially if you are always saying yes. But just like anything else it gets easier as you say no more frequently. So will you say yes to saying NO?

Clutter Busting: JUST STOP! It Really Isn’t Free

July 29, 2017 by clutterbusting Leave a Comment

Just because something is free, doesn’t mean you should bring it into your home. Besides the lure of free gifts with purchase, two for the price of one or buy three and get one free, there is the guilt or feeling of obligation to bring something into your home because someone gives it you. Yes, I am talking gifts and hand-me-downs in addition to purchases.

Here are some tips to help you resist and handle not bringing free items into your home:

  • Resist giveaway items : shirts, pens or mugs with logos and random brochures just because someone is handing them out.
  • Don’t feel obligated to accept hand-me-downs especailly if you won’t read the book right now or if the clothing size is not currently being worn (kid’s clothing for example).
  • Be gracious and accept gifts but don’t feel you have to keep them. You can regift or donate them.
  • Keep only inherited items that give joy. Don’t take or keep something just because it was in the family and you feel grief or guilt.
  • Know your needs and be choosy. You do have a choice about what you bring into your home.
  • Consider the cost of storing something you ae not using. What is the emotional and physical cost?
  • Bring along a friend and ask for their help in deciding on purchases or value.
  • If you have to, avoid places where you have a history of being an impulsive buyer such as the dollar store, flea market or your favorite store.

Using even one or two of these tips can help you change your buying habits and stop clutter before it even enters your home.

Clutter Busting: JUST STOP! More Tips

July 22, 2017 by clutterbusting Leave a Comment

Here are some more tips on how to stop clutter even before it comes into your home. Shop smarter by making sure you purchase the right item and only that.

  • Don’t shop for entertainment.
  • Do research large or major purchases first.
  • Don’t forget to bring important information with you when shopping such as sizes, colors, etc.
  • Do shop from a list so you stay focused.
  • Don’t buy one in every color.
  • Don’t buy it just because it is on sale.
  • Don’t buy super-sized items if you don’t have a place to store it or if you don’t use large quantities in a short period of time.
  • Don’t buy it just because there is a free gift with purchase.
  • Don’t be lured to buy the complete set.
  • Don’t buy it just because your friend says they use or love something without first deciding if you will use it.

Being aware of how and what you buy can help you change your shopping habits and lead to bringing fewer items into the home through impulsive purchases. And avoids adding to the clutter. Which of these tips will you use?
