Clutter Busting: Handling Your Hot Spot

April 11, 2015 by clutterbusting Leave a Comment

We all have at least one hot spot. A hot spot is that place in your home that constantly has stacks, piles or messes. It is the place where clutter lives and thrives in your home.

In my home it has been the one counter top in the kitchen where the mail, receipts and other items moving through my home ends up. It basically functions as a staging area and so everything coming and going into my home usually lands there. Once I got that area under control with constant vigilance it stays that way 90% of the time. Occasionally my entry hall bench ends up being a hot spot or the kitchen sink.

There is a lot to be said by for getting your hot spot cleared. It makes you feel in control and less overwhelmed.

What’s your hot spot?

Clutter Busting: A Constant Process

April 4, 2015 by clutterbusting Leave a Comment

Many people think of clutter busting as a something that is completed once and is done. Clutter busting is a constant process.

Just like losing weight, many people fail at controlling their clutter because they think of it as a destination and not a journey.

If you look at clutter busting as a process of daily routines, weekly, monthly and yearly maintenance and projects, you will be able to have better handle on your clutter because if you just pay attention to your stuff once in a while it can pile up quickly.

So look at your calendar today and schedule your next clutter busting project to start this week, add one clutter routine to today’s list and schedule one maintenance task this month. For example, I plan to organize my scrapbooking supplies as my project this week, today is laundry day (which means wash, fold and put away) and this month cleaning the hall closet (switching seasonal items) has been added to my calendar as my twice annual maintenance.

I would love to hear what you’ve added.

March 28, 2015 by clutterbusting Leave a Comment

Here are some Spring cleaning tips:

1. Make A Plan

2. Set Reasonable Goals

In essence, make a reasonable plan of attack that has at least a 98% chance of being accomplished!

 3. Check For Cleaning Supplies

There is nothing more frustrating than to start a project only to find that you’re out of supplies.  ld clean

4.  Declutter Before Cleaning

It is frustrating to be ready to dust an area only to realize that you have to move  knick-knacks, pieces of junk mail, broken crayons and wadded up kleenexes before you can get started. Ask me how I know. Humph.  Save yourself a headache and get rid of the garbage and extraneous clutter before cleaning!

5. Change Up Your Accessories For A New Look

To freshen things up, since  it’s Spring, try switching out heavy, darker items out with lighter and brighter accessories!

6.   Design A Daily Cleaning Schedule

After all your hard work is done, make sure that you have a good cleaning schedule in place.  Whether you need to make one from scratch or update the one you have, set small daily tasks that will help keep your house in order until the next Spring cleaning

Clutter Busting: What is the Key?

March 21, 2015 by clutterbusting Leave a Comment

What is your key to clutter busting?

The key is not in your clutter. Your clutter is a substitute for another need. What is your need? It is different for every person. And you probably know what it is even if it is lying in the shadows. Don’t be afraid to venture there and find that key.

You need to find the root cause, the key,  for why you have clutter in order to create harmony out of the chaos. Spend some time this week investigating your true desires or needs to begin to conquer the chaos.

Clutter Busting: Are you Overcommitted?

March 14, 2015 by clutterbusting Leave a Comment

Being overcommitted has important ramifications for managing your clutter. When you are overcommitted, you tend to allow insufficient time for each activity, as well as insufficient time between activities; consequently, you constantly leave items unfinished.

If you are overcommitted people you may be willing to stop in midair the moment others call. You fail to take charge of your schedule and instead respond to the needs of everybody else. Therefore, you spend most of your time in crisis mode, which, along with flooding your body with adrenaline, triggering you to try and  save five seconds here and ten seconds there by not putting things away and then spend three hours frantically searching for something they can’t find.

So when you are overcommitted you can wind up in a vicious cycle with your things. You may feel that you are too busy dealing with the next emergency to take the time to even hire the help you need to make inroads into your clutter.

An obvious solution is to try to scale back your commitments. To do this, you must stop the merry-go-round, and spend some time thinking about what matters most to you. Ask yourself what commitments are most important to you, and how you decide to commit.

Rethinking your obligations is a way that may enable you to stop overcommitting. Use these strategies: [Read more…] about Clutter Busting: Are you Overcommitted?
