Clutter Busting: Where to Begin?

January 31, 2015 by clutterbusting Leave a Comment

When dealing with clutter, even if you have made peace with your stuff and have a plan, you still may find yourself roaming randomly on a Saturday morning that you scheduled to begin your decluttering.

Sometimes this difficulty starting can come from a feeling that you might make a wrong decision or it may be that you are simply overwhelmed just like I was over a decade ago when I had to clean out my uncle’s home of 40 plus years.

Cleaning out my uncle’s home was where I began my journey in dealing with clutter and my desire to help others deal with theirs. I learned many lessons during that winter and spring getting his home ready to sell. [Read more…] about Clutter Busting: Where to Begin?

Clutter Busting: What’s the Plan?

January 24, 2015 by clutterbusting Leave a Comment

I have previously written about having a mission and vision for your life and things. I have also posted about making a plan.

I would like to talk a little more about planning in relation to dealing with your clutter. Having a plan for decluttering is defining how you are going to do it and when you are going to do what. When we plan, we sequence activities and decide what is most important to you can help you prioritize.

Planning is not a one-time marathon session but an ongoing process that you do every day and it is essential for success when decluttering.

Train yourself to spend 30 to 60 minutes each month and at least 15 minutes each day clarifying your plan.

Use a planner, which ever you prefer, and list only those to-dos in a month that you think you can accomplish based on your goals.

Be sure to calendarize planning. I mean, actually block out time in your calendar for planning daily and monthly. Look at your goals for clutter busting and pick one or two to focus on for the next month. If the task is a one-time activity, select a date to do it within the next month. For example, if you need to buy new files folders to set up your 2015 files, then schedule that in your calendar on a specific day. [Read more…] about Clutter Busting: What’s the Plan?

Clutter Busting: Make Peace with Your Stuff

January 17, 2015 by clutterbusting Leave a Comment

Making peace with your stuff is a good place to start with clutter busting. This is both an inside and outside job. Understanding your clutter habits and your thinking about clutter as well as your feelings about clutter is an important part of getting rid of clutter.

Do you ever find yourself saying “if only…” blaming your situation or other people or yourself you’re your clutter instead of confronting the situation exactly as it is.

So to make peace with your stuff or clutter look at situational factors: time, space, money, health, disabilities, other people and life changes.

If you take the time to do this you may realized that your spouse as well as your lack of space in relocating to a smaller home are primary situations for you.

Once you know your situation you can choose to change the situation or devise a strategy to account for your situation. Don’t forget there is also the option of outside help to deal with your clutter if you can’t determine how to solve the situation.

Understanding your clutter situation and be a first step in conquering the chaos for good. This is where a life coach can help. If you are interested in an introductory life coaching session, contact me to find out more.

Surviving the Holidays: Celebrate Wisely

December 13, 2014 by clutterbusting Leave a Comment

Many of us treat ourselves during the holiday season. Enjoying the festivities and the food is fine, just be smart about it.

Plan ahead so you can wisely enjoy holiday foods and treats. Here are some tips:

  • Prior to each event plan on which foods you will consume in moderation.
  • Bring a healthy option to the buffet.
  • Share that holiday dessert with someone else.
  • Watch your serving size. Use a smaller plate and be familiar with normal serving sizes.
  • Alternate a drink with a glass of water.
  • If you are indulging, take your time eating and you will likely consume less. Pause between bites or put your fork down occasionally.
  • Continue your regular physical activity schedule.

By being aware and planning ahead you can treat yourself wisely. Enjoy the holidays!
