Clutter Busting: Start with Your Mind

July 12, 2014 by clutterbusting Leave a Comment

Since de-cluttering and organizing are about making decisions, before you begin a project take some time to clean your mind and set yourself up for success by being in the right frame of mind.

Here are some questions to ask yourself prior to starting your de-cluttering:

  • What are your intentions about organizing and de-cluttering the space you are going to work on?
  • What feeling do you want to create in the space?
  • What is the space going to be used for?
  • What does the space look like once it is de-clutter (what is your vision for the space)?
  • What items are important to you right now? In a few months from now?

When you take time to think about the answers to these questions you are in a better place to de-clutter the space. It can help make decision making easier.

Also, affirmations can help you get and stay focused. Affirmations can energize you and keep your desires in mind. For example, if you are de-cluttering your papers a possible affirmation is: My papers are sorted and filed allowing papers to flow easily in my life. Or when organizing you entry way: My space is calm, organized and welcoming.

By starting with your mind you will have a clear picture of your desired results and this will help the decision making process.

June 28, 2014 by clutterbusting Leave a Comment

Do you find yourself with a media center cabinet a jumble of DVD, movies, electronic games and cords? When you use something does it make it back in the cabinet?

To gain control over a media center, as a family decide what should reside there and remove everything else from the space.

Begin by removing everything from the cabinet and group items by category. Eliminate the movies and games that your family has outgrown.

The next step is to find containers that would work to corral the remaining items. Consider what would work for your family such as open versus closed containers. Consider using storage items you already have versus going out to buy new ones. Baskets or photo storage boxes work well. Also think square or rectangle shapes versus round in a media center. And magazine holders keep manual together or game instructions. Create a designated home for remotes as well as for cords. [Read more…] about Clutter Busting: Managing Media Madness

Clutter Busting: Jewelry Solutions

June 21, 2014 by clutterbusting Leave a Comment

Is your jewelry a jumbled mess? Do you know what you have or do you use the same pieces because you don’t want to sort the mess?

Take a little time to tame your jewelry and expand your wardrobe.

Use the same principle of sort and purge. Pull out every piece of jewelry you have a lay it out in one area. Use the same technique to sell, donate, toss, repair/clean or keep.

Figure out what you have left and think about how you use jewelry. Do you take it off when you get in the door and need a common place to put it in the kitchen so you can carry it upstairs to the bed room later? Will you take the time to put things back in boxes or drawers or would it be easier to create a visually pleasing solution out in the open? Remember you don’t have to be confined to a jewelry box.

Use hooks for necklaces that you use often versus placing in a drawer. Use a tray for bangle bracelets. Use a picture frame with burlap for earrings and a small bowl for rings.

Thinking about how you use your jewelry can help keep it organized and avoid chaos plus you will enjoy he expanded selections.

Clutter Busting: Smart Shopping for Storage Solutions

June 14, 2014 by clutterbusting Leave a Comment

Do you have container clutter? Do you buy containers for organizing projects and then find out they don’t work. Here are some tips to help you make smart purchase decisions for your organizing projects.

  • Purge and sort THEN buy new containers and storage solutions. Don’t waste money or time by buying ahead before you know what you need.
  • Square or rectangle storage bins or boxes use less space and are easier to stack.
  • Inventory containers you already have. Use what you can to reinforce your new clutter-free life.
  • Repurpose items such as gift boxes for jewelry and photo boxes to contain small items in drawers until you see what works for you. Even paper towel rolls can be used to organize items. Use different items such as a paper towel holder to corral bracelets.
  • When you are ready to buy containers examine the construction and operate any moveable parts to determine if they will stand up to repeated use. [Read more…] about Clutter Busting: Smart Shopping for Storage Solutions
