Clutter Busting: Smart Closet Solutions

June 7, 2014 by clutterbusting Leave a Comment

To continue with containing closet clutter so that you can avoid chaos, you can incorporate smart solutions to keep clutter at bay. Here are some quick solutions:

  • Keep baskets or totes stocked with activity items such as your gym bag, beach or pool items or hiking gear and hang from a rod. So this is grab and go.
  • Use closed or open bins on the top shelf for out-of-season clothing and gear. Secure labels on them. Use lower shelves for items you use often to ensure they get returned to their designated spot.
  • Slanted shoe racks, if space allows, keeps shoes off the floor and is easier to use than cubbies. For all situations arrange shoes so the heel is showing on one shoe and the toe is showing on the other. This creates more space and helps with decision making of what to wear. Clutter Busting: Use Vertical Space

May 17, 2014 by clutterbusting Leave a Comment

One way to control clutter is to utilize vertical space whether in the entry way, mudroom, closet, garage or laundry room.

Here are some ideas to make use of vertical space:

  • Add adjustable shelving. Use wall mounted or post shelving.
  • Mount racks to hold items such as long-handled tools or other items such as sweepers and dusters.
  • Hang tubs or baskets from hooks to make frequently used items easy to grab.
  • Hang items from the ceiling such as bikes in the garage.
  • Hang items like the ironing board.
  • Use a towel bar to hang table cloths or other linen on the closet side wall or door.
  • Install hooks for bags or purse or keys.
  • Add a second shelf in the closet for infrequently used or out of season items.

Keeping the floor clear can decrease visual clutter and going vertical can maximize storage space. Where can you add vertical storage in your home?
