Clutter Busting: Be Happy!

October 26, 2013 by clutterbusting Leave a Comment

Chris Prentiss in her book Zen and the art of happiness (Power Press 2006) begins “There is only one way to achieve lasting happiness. The way is simply: Be happy.”

I read that and immediately closed the book astounded that the wisdom of the book was in the first two sentences. Then of course, I opened it again and read in earnest. What other words of wisdom would I find?

I purchased the book because I heard a story on TV about a local Michigan judge that was handing out this book to people who appeared in her court. I was intrigued. [Read more…] about Clutter Busting: Be Happy!

Clutter Busting: Finding Hidden Wealth in Your Clutter

October 12, 2013 by clutterbusting Leave a Comment

If you need some motivation to conquer your clutter…one of the benefits to clearing out clutter is sometimes finding hidden wealth. Many times when you start clearing out clutter you might find hidden treasures such as gift cards hidden in stacks, clothes and household goods that you can sell or consign.

Begin by sorting just one area in by making piles of the things you are ready to let go of: trash, keep, donate and sell.

Once sorted turn some of your excess stuff into cash… [Read more…] about Clutter Busting: Finding Hidden Wealth in Your Clutter

Clutter Busting: Paper Piles

September 28, 2013 by clutterbusting Leave a Comment

The problem with papers is that there are more of them in a smaller space. Think about it…how large an area do 100 sheets of paper take up as compared to 10 boxes of stuff? So it is no wonder that we can become overwhelmed with paper.

Here are three tips for dealing with paper clutter:

  1. Start filing. Just do it now. No one loves to file but when you can put your hands on what you need when you need it filing pays off. So grab a stack from your file pile and file it now for 15 minutes.
  2. Scan sentimental memories. Save letters, cards, ticket stubs, invitations or mom’s recipes digitally on your hard drive or a flash drive. Schedule 15 minutes this week to scan some of your memories.
  3. Create a binder or expanding folder to keep your most important information such as emergency contacts, contractors, home and health and car information and restaurants. You can also do this for any theme such as recipes to try or warranties. Schedule 15 minutes this week to create a binder to corral loose papers.

Decluttering your paper piles can really create room and conquer visual chaos.
