Having an eight week timeline for planning a stress-free holiday is ideal. Yet you can still reduce the anxiety caused by the holidays if you strategically use the six weeks remaining before the holiday. Here is a list of specific tasks to accomplish week by week for the next six weeks to take the stress out of the holidays.

  • 6 weeks: develop gift list, set up gift-wrapping center shop/wrap ½ of gift list, develop card list, address envelopes/create holiday letter/copy
  • 5 weeks: shop/wrap ½ of gift list, finalize baking/menu list, buy stamps gather return labels
  • 4 weeks: decorate outdoors, write holiday cards, buy baking supplies
  • 3 weeks: decorate indoors, mail gifts/cards
  • 2 weeks: attend/host parties, buy grocery staples, bake/cook ahead, begin cleaning/finalize holiday menu

Clutter Busting: Are Your Emotions being hijacked?

November 7, 2015 by clutterbusting Leave a Comment

Are you letting others hijack your happiness? Do you have that one person who seems to be on a mission to make you miserable? The one person who thrives on drama?

It’s not your job to fix that person. Realize that you can’t fix someone else you can only fix yourself.

So stop being the victim of other’s emotions. Stop changing everyone else because you can only change yourself.

If we want to change a relationship we have to change ourselves. We have to stop allowing others to have the keys to our happiness. Start taking control by asking yourself:

  • Can I change the situation?
  • Can I can my attitude?
  • Can I change the environment?

You may not be able to free yourself totally from drama, especially with the upcoming holidays, but you can control the effects. And you can choose how to react to others. When we become different other people treat us differently.

So choose to take control and how you react.

Clutter Busting: You can’t drive a parked car

October 24, 2015 by clutterbusting Leave a Comment

Inertia. In physics, inertia means that an object tends to stay exactly where it is unless another object makes it move. Once it’s in motion, it tends to stay in motion until something intervenes to stop it. It still requires a little work to keep it moving, but only a fraction of what it took to set it in motion. If that work doesn’t take place, the object gradually slows down and ends up where it started.

In relationships, inertia means that nothing changes unless someone starts the process. Once that action is taken and there is some movement in the relationship, it takes a lot less action to keep it going. But if no action takes place, the relationship reverts back to where it started.

We understand that it takes a lot of energy to begin working on unhealthy relationships. But do we want to keep it moving? That’s a valid question, because we don’t have any guarantees about where it will go once it is in motion.

If you have a difficult relationship you can make the effort and risk to change your relationship. And don’t forget to also look at your own contribution to the relationship. The situation will only change if you release the parking break. So don’t get stuck whether it is in a relationship or in a situation…only you can set things (change) in motion. Release the break to move forward.

Clutter Busting: Don’t Sweat the Wrong Stuff

October 17, 2015 by clutterbusting Leave a Comment

Do you get upset about everything that happens to or around you? Do you see the negative in everything? Do you try to fix everyone’s behavior or take responsibility for it? If you do, no wonder you are surrounded by drama.

We may not always have the solution to fix it nor should we always try to fix others. It isn’t our responsibility. If we are trying to fix others we may have chosen the wrong stuff. You are only responsible for your own choice. When you focus on your own responsibilities, the more you will be in charge of your emotions. Don’t give away control of your emotions over to others and their drama. And don’t be dependent on what others think of you.

When you make your own choice it’s like the announcement on the airplane to put the oxygen mask on yourself first.

Sometimes the small stuff is important. Yet you should be more interested in your own stuff first.
