The Journey into Clutter Busting- What’s my destination?

February 19, 2011 by clutterbusting Leave a Comment

Okay. I admit that I am a planner. A person who likes to have the details spelled out, who needs a plan and who needs to consider all the possibilities of a project. I am that person who creates a project checklist for anything that I more than once (another confession). It doesn’t make sense to me that others don’t do this. In fact I was so “proud” and a little stunned when my adult niece pulled out her checklist for a family holiday dinner I was attending and proceeded to tell me she had learned that from me.

It is proven that writing down goals and visioning what you desired will make success more likely. So my first step on my journey to again becoming clutter-free was having a vision of what I wanted, write down my goals and create an action plan.

Now I know that sounds like a lot of work…but how many times have you tried to lose weight or get organized only to go backwards? Having a clear vision of where you want to be and writing down your goal and action plan will help ensure your success. Setting the stage for success is important in reaching your destination. It can also help you enjoy the journey along the way.

In my next post, I will share my vision for this journey I am on. In the meantime, you may want to do a little work yourself by reading my previous posts on mission, vision and values. I look forward to sharing my vision with you…

Confessions from the Clutter Busting Coach

February 12, 2011 by clutterbusting Leave a Comment

The reason that I became so interested in clutter busting is that I have had to do a fair share of de-cluttering in my life.

I have the reputation at my place of employment of being the “go to” person if someone needs historical data. At home I am the keeper of family memories and traditions. And I have personally organized, down-sized and moved at least three of my elder family member’s homes. [Read more…] about Confessions from the Clutter Busting Coach

Longings from the Clutter Busting Coach

February 5, 2011 by clutterbusting 1 Comment

On January 1, 2011 my post encouraged you to determine what you were longing for. So in order to walk the talk, I inventoried my longings.

The longing that stood out for me and the one I am focused on for 2011 is balance. And what does that mean for me?

I believe that my life is out of balance because I am constantly struggling with “doing” versus “being”.  And my life is currently focused on doing the responsible thing versus following my passion.

Now I not saying I am not going to pay my bills or grocery shop. What I am saying is that there is a way to live the life of your (my) dreams (even if it is in little bits).

Knowledge is power and identifying this longing …acknowledging that this struggle is creating chaos for me and throwing me off balance is the first step in process.

I invite you to join me in my journey to find balance, to conquer chaos in my own life and to thrive in 2011. Join me by checking out the post on my website regularly to see how my journey unfolds.

Regift, Recycle…Save

November 26, 2010 by clutterbusting 2 Comments

According to www.nationalregiftingday.com the third Thursday before Christmas is National Regifting Day. This year that date is December 16, 2010.

This date is particularly appropriate since the third Thursday of December it is the most common day for a holiday office party. And it seems that coworkers are the recipients of the majority of regifts.

So why not bring regifting out of the closet and turn your office or family gift exchange into a regifting party. And before you shut the door to that idea know that regifting is becoming more accepted mostly because it is a way to save holiday expenses and as a way to recycle.

Of course, if you regift there are some guidelines to follow.

Still not ready to regift then give others gift certificates or vouchers for the valuable gift of your time. Things such a yard work, baking or babysitting are possible gifts of time.

Organize for Back to School: Create a Study Zone for Your Child

August 28, 2010 by clutterbusting Leave a Comment

One of the keys to academic success for your child is to provide them with a productive study area at home. You can turn any space within the child’s bedroom, playroom or dorm room into an efficient and organized study area with a little planning.

  1. Pick an area and a desk.
Find a smooth surface with room for your student to spread out study materials. Select a chair that is comfortable and that has good back support. And don’t forget to consider adequate lighting.
  2. Limit potential distractions.
Implement a phone and television-free zone to reduce temptation. Especially if the study zone is in a high traffic area of the home institute a firm study time where everyone in the family respects the student’s time to study.
