Spring Is In The Air…Is It Time To De-clutter Your Life?

March 17, 2009 by clutterbusting Leave a Comment

The approach of spring has many people thinking about spring cleaning. Are you one of those people?

Being brought up in a household that believed strongly in spring and fall cleaning this process became a ritual for me as I was growing up. At the end of the process I remember that I definitely felt different about the space I lived in. Well, I felt that I had more space and I felt lighter.

Whether you go through the spring cleaning process or not, whether you regularly schedule cleaning and organizing sessions or not, this time of year is a great time to de-clutter…to rid yourself of the clutter in your life. Keep Your Mind on What You Want

March 14, 2009 by clutterbusting 1 Comment

I am currently reading a fascinating book by John C. Maxwell entitled Thinking for a Change: 11 Ways Highly Successful People Approach Life and Work (Center Street 2003). This book really does make you want to change the way you think.

One chapter discusses using the potential of focused thinking, but in order to do so you need to clear away mental clutter and distractions. Today we are proud of our ability to multitask…doing many things good enough, but how many of them are accomplished at an excellent level. In the chaos of the day, focusing on your priorities and goals can take a backstage to the busyness of the day. So if you have been wondering why the things you say are important aren’t getting done this may be the answer. [Read more…] about Keep Your Mind on What You Want

De-Clutter Your Life

March 3, 2009 by clutterbusting Leave a Comment

In your pursuit of finding more time, have you considered your mental clutter and how it may be stopping you from achieving your dreams?

Mental clutter is all the stuff you have swirling around in your head including personal and professional obligations, beliefs, goals, to-do lists, should-do lists and worry. Is your mind filled with too much stuff?

One way to remove some of the mental clutter is to get everything down on paper in a master list. But this really more about all the things you currently “do” in your life. Is everything on your list something you must do, should do or could do? There is a difference between a busy life and a cluttered life. You can be busy and still enjoy your life. If you feel tired, overwhelmed and frustrated it is time to assess things to see if you have cluttered up your life.

Start by looking at your master list and cross off all the things that you could do or adjust them. For example do you have to volunteer at your children’s school every week or can you do it twice a month? Just like reorganizing your physical stuff, you can reorganize your life to look completely different so you can meet your goals. Oh, and don’t forget to put time for you on the must do portion of the list. If you spend time on yourself you will have more time for others and enjoy it more. Know that you are in control of your life…you can make changes. What change are you going to make to de-clutter your life today?

Card Clutter

December 27, 2008 by clutterbusting Leave a Comment

So what did you do with this year’s holiday cards? What did you do with that anniversary, birthday or Valentine’s Day card you received in 2008?

Did you throw it out, throw it in a box, scrapbook it or add it to one of your piles?

Trying to figure out what to do with all those special cards you get from those you love and who love you can be difficult.

To Regift or Not- That is the Question…

December 9, 2008 by clutterbusting 2 Comments

I know people who think that regifting is tacky or means that you don’t think much of the recipient if you regift to them. As a life coach, encouraging individuals to clear clutter from their space, I personally think that regifting is great if done with the the best of intentions and as long as a few “rules” are followed.

For those that may be new to the concept, regifting is the act of taking a gift that has been received and giving it to somebody else. If you haven’t heard the term “regifting” you may have heard the term “white elephant gift exchange” (and even those that pshaw regifting have probably participated in one of these).

Even though the practice pre-dates the term, in 1995 the term became popular in an episode of the NBC sitcom Seinfeld (“The Label Maker”) when one of the characters “regifted” a label maker to Jerry Seinfeld.

If you do plan to regift there are rules of etiquette that you should follow: [Read more…] about To Regift or Not- That is the Question…
