Do You Know Yourself?

October 1, 2016 by clutterbusting Leave a Comment

26-questions-to-help-you-know-yourself-betterDo you know who you are? We all play many roles in our lives: mom or dad, colleague, wife or husband, aunt or uncle, manager, daughter or son, or volunteer. The list can go on. But do you really have a sense of who you are? Are you lost in all your roles?

You could hope that you asked and answered the question in your teens or in your 20s about whom you are and who you want to be. But it is a normal part of life to re-ask those questions when we hit middle age in order to regain our sense of purpose and self-understanding.

Sharon Martin, LCSW, created some questions and journaling prompts that will help you gain understand of who you really are. Consider journaling on a question or two daily to help you work through this process of rediscovery.

I am so glad I came across this resource. Next…my journaling for today.

Less is More or Is It?

August 13, 2016 by clutterbusting Leave a Comment

less is more 2

Is less more?

I guess it depends on what we have less or more of.

Think about some of the negatives in your life. Would your life be better if there were fewer of them? Then I could argue that less is more.

Here are a few more things to do less of:

  • Over-scheduling
  • Comparing
  • Frowning
  • Hating
  • Over-analyzing
  • Judging
  • Overeating
  • Jumping to conclusions

Do less of these and make room for the positives in life.

Clutter Busting: Put Together a Powerful Morning

July 30, 2016 by clutterbusting Leave a Comment

Here are some great tips from the book “Organizing for Success” (The McGaw-Hill Companies 2010) on how to put together a powerful morning.

  • Limit checking email first thing into the morning to 15-20 minutes to only identify and respond to priorities.
  • Move meetings to the afternoon, if possible.
  • Get to work early.
  • Stop working or staying up late.
  • Create a power hour each morning to handle issues or concerns in order to avoid frequent interruptions.
  • Be realistic when you plan your day. Only plan tasks for the time available.
  • Leave some time in your day for the unexpected.
  • Plan to work on at least two high priority projects/tasks before noon.

It’s all about planning for success… using the time you have available to your best advantage. What one thing can you do differently to create a powerful morning that works for you.

Clutter Busting: Find Two More Hours a Day

July 23, 2016 by clutterbusting Leave a Comment

Are you staying late at work daily?

Do you feel like you are missing out on life?

Would you like to find two more hours a day?

In the book “Organizing for Success” (The McGaw-Hill Companies 2010) by Kenneth Zeigler, he provides tips on finding two more hours each day.

  • Look at your tasks and ways to save time doing them.
  • Are there tasks you could delegate?
  • Organize the night before.
  • Batch your activities. Do similar activities together (make all your return calls at the same time).
  • Begin work on your top priority task first thing when you get to the office in the morning.
  • Are there any tasks you can simply eliminate?

Are you ready to find two more hours today?

Clutter Busting: Organizing for Success

July 16, 2016 by clutterbusting Leave a Comment

I recently read the book “Organizing for Success” by Kenneth Zeigler ( The McGaw-Hill Companies 2010).

Even though I help my clients clear mental and physical clutter from their lives to create harmony, I like to read for more ideas, but also to continually improve myself and my techniques.

I have also recently felt a little less organized than usual so I was drawn to this book to see if I could find any morsels of wisdom for myself. Here are a few gems that stood out to me:

  • Start the day with the most important task on your list first.
  • You will never have more time, so make the most of your current time.
  • Keep your desk top clear. The future and past on your desk are distractions.
  • Manage interruptions.
  • Evaluate you meetings. Are all your meetings necessary?
  • Use a master task list.
  • Do one thing at a time.
  • Determine urgency versus importance.
  • Use the end of the day to plan tomorrow.

I have recommended and employed many of these ideas myself. This is just a good reminder that we have choices and we can make the choice to change especially if something no longer works for us.

Implementing even one of these things can improve your productivity and, therefore, your success. I realized that I needed to gain control of my desktop again. And I am finding that I am getting more done and feeling less overwhelmed with fewer distractions in my line of sight.
